Hagia Sophia To Hold Tarawih Prayer after 88 Years

Hagia Sophia regained its status after more than eight decades. The first Tarawih prayers have offered at the Aya Sofia Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey (Alhamdulillah’s). On the first night of Ramadan, hundreds of worshipers gathered at the mosque to attend the historic event.

Turkiye’s Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque in Istanbul held its first tarawih prayer in 88 years on a special evening prayer during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan 2022. A number of events for Ramadan will also held at the mosque. This mosque which was converted into a museum in 1934 has regained its status as a mosque in 2020. This place was opened for worship on July 24 of that year.

Hagia Sophia is a Museum or a Mosque Place ?

Hagia Sophia was built in the year 532 CE. After the conquest of Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1453, it was converted into a mosque. It served as a church for 916 years and 86 years as a museum. But for most of its existence – from 1453 to 1934, or nearly 500 years – it served as a mosque. Later, In 1985, Hagia Sophia was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. So, the historic shrine was converted into a museum in 1934 and was restored to mosque status in 2020. Aside from being a mosque, Aya Sofia is one of Turkey’s top tourist destinations. This place is always open to domestic and foreign visitors.
