01 — About This Dataset
What’s in here, and how it was built
This dataset contains the coded variables for all 93 online news stories analysed in the research report Counted, But Not Covered: Religious Minorities in Pakistan’s News Media. Each row represents one news story mentioning a religious minority — Christian, Hindu, Ahmadi, Sikh, or other — collected from Dawn English and Nawai Waqt Urdu between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024.
The dataset was created by SB Qureshii (Journalist & GIS Researcher) as part of a twelve-month content analysis of both outlets’ online archives. Stories were identified through keyword searches — Christian, Hindu, Ahmadi, Sikh — manually reviewed for relevance, and logged by hand into a coding sheet capturing city, by-line status, affected community, story format, subject, length, and story angle for every story.
Of the 93 stories coded, 57 come from Dawn English and 36 from Nawai Waqt Urdu. The full variable definitions and coded values are documented in the downloadable PDF codebook below.
